Know your options

Travel Insurance

Visitors who aren't Canadian residents aren't covered by our government health insurance plans, so an illness or accident during a visit can mean significant out-of-pocket medical expenses. Visitor-to-Canada insurance is available for travellers visiting family or friends, landed immigrants or returning Canadians waiting for provincial health coverage, and people in Canada on a work or student visa. Contact us at least a week before you set off — insurance companies can require a waiting period of up to 30 days if you apply after landing in Canada.

Super Visa Insurance

To obtain a Parent or Grandparent Super Visa, applicants must have valid emergency medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company, valid for a minimum of 1 year, that covers emergency medical care, hospitalization and repatriation with a minimum of $100,000 in coverage — available for review by a port-of-entry officer. You choose the plan's start date and can change the effective date before coverage begins. If no visa is granted for any reason, you get a 100% refund; if your parents return sooner than a year, a partial, prorated refund is available as long as certain criteria are met.
